Interesting Facts About Skunks

Skunks are fascinating creatures native to North America. Their main feature is their ability to spray a liquid produced by special glands under their tail when threatened. The stream can reach up to 4 meters and turns the attacker into a stinky mess for quite some time. If the liquid gets on clothing, it's best to discard it immediately, as the smell is impossible to wash out. However, a mixture of soap, baking soda, and hydrogen peroxide can help remove it from the skin.

This ability has sometimes been exploited by humans to harm enemies. For instance, one skunk released into a clothing factory in the US caused several million dollars' worth of damage.

Skunks are highly beneficial to American farmers as they prey on pests like the Colorado potato beetle. However, they also have a penchant for feasting on bees and can decimate entire hives in a single night.

These animals are primarily nocturnal but can be active during the day as well. Large predators tend to avoid them.

As an experiment several decades ago, attempts were made to introduce skunks into the territory of the Soviet Union. However, predators unaccustomed to skunks quickly eradicated them, suffering greatly from the terrible smell afterward.

Removing the glands containing the "aromatic" secretion allows skunks to be kept as pets. Owners of such animals claim they are loyal, tidy, and affectionate creatures.
